Klenling: The following is a quote from David Voegtle, one of the DellTalk moderators:

There are differing opinions on this issue. One side says that turning the system on and off causes a power surge to the components. The other side says that leaving the system on all the time narrows the gap for component longevity (electronic components are rated for hours of use before failure), and also uses power needlessly when the system is not in use. My opinion is that it really depends on what you are doing. If you need to have the system on 24 hours a day to receive faxes or electronic mail then you can leave the system on and power off the monitor (minimum power saving). If you do not leave the system on then I use the rule that if I will not be using the system for between 2 and 4 hours then I turn it off. Power Management is useful if you leave the system on all the time, but if the system locks up it can cause problems that you may not have otherwise.

The only possible thing I could add is that it's probably a good idea to reboot every day or two to free up system resources if you do decide to leave it run all the time.......

the only time I shut down is to throw one away and plug in a new one. Four systems running, all 24/7. One over 7 years old, one four years, one six months, one 48 hrs. No detrimental effects.
DOD has systems running for much longer, shutting down only for routine maintenance, once a month. Re-start every other day and all should be well. If you don't like electric bill, shut down when not in use. No evidence to support either theory about component life, simply a matter of need or preferance. Only adverse effect to on-off lifestyle was IBM monitors didn't like the on off thing. Went through three in six months. Since went to different monitor mfr, no hardware problems logged.
